I run Highmark Ledger, a bookkeeping and tax firm for small service businesses in Lincoln and Omaha. Before that I spent 10 years in civil engineering and project management, which is a long way of saying I spent a decade turning messy real-world processes into steps that run the same way every time. That is the same skill this AI work needs, and it is why I came at it the way I did.
I did not set out to teach AI. I started using it to take the worst parts of my own week off my plate. The first tool I built took a payroll job that used to eat 2 days and got it done in about 2 hours, correct. A deal analysis that took me a full day now takes about 10 minutes. Once I saw that, I started building the same kind of thing for other owners I know here in town.
Bill, a Medicare agent, needed his handwritten notes to stop piling up, so I built him something that reads a photo and files it in his CRM. Eric, a commercial contractor, needed to stop hand-assembling every subcontract, so we built a skill that does the document work for him. Neither of them is technical. Neither of them wanted to become technical. They wanted one job off their plate, and that is what they got.
That is the whole reason I teach this the way I do. I am not a guru who read about AI, and I am not selling you software. I am an owner and an accountant in your town who figured out a repeatable way to do this, and I would rather show you how it works than tell you it is magic. If you are in Lincoln or Omaha, you can shake my hand and ask me anything.
QuickBooks ProAdvisor. 10 years in engineering and project management. Building AI employees for local owners since the tools got good enough to trust with real work.
